THE first pupils who walked through the doors of Le Rocquier when it opened in 1975 are invited to return to the school next week to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Next Monday – 8 September – will mark exactly the day when lessons began at the St Clement secondary school, beginning a year of events to mark this milestone. Pupils from the first year group will recreate the moment they entered the school and then join a celebratory assembly.

Although already up and running, Le Rocquier School was officially opened by the Duchess of Kent on 24 May 1977

That evening, the first intake are invited to return for a tour of the school at 6 pm.

Other activities and events are planned this term, including the launch of a project to share archive material, daily tours of the school in November and a special celebratory evening for all current staff, ex-staff and other guests on Wednesday 12 November.

Headteacher Andrew Adkin said: “These are just our celebrations within the first term. Our spring term will focus more on our current students and links to the past within lessons and assemblies and during our summer term we hope to offer further opportunities to celebrate.

“Le Rocquier School is, and has been, a part of many people’s lives and we hope to share this unique year with as many of them as possible.”

Talking about the archive community project, Mr Adkin said: “This is a way for our whole past community to share memories.

“We want families to find those old photos and talk about the memories within the home and then share them with us via our web page.

“A mobile phone is all you need to take an image of the photo and upload it to our site. It would be even better if there was an explanation of what the photo is and when it was taken.

“We want to create a bank of images that capture the life in the school over the last 50 years and display as many as possible within the school when we open to the public in November.”
