JERSEY Opera House is seeking to appoint a new permanent chair after several high profile departures from the board.

The theatre is set to reopen this autumn after shutting its doors in 2020 during the Covid pandemic and having undergone a multi-million makeover.

But, the grand reopening has been hit by several board members leaving at short notice.

Previous interim chair Dave Chalk and interim director Andy Eagle resigned in April, while Cyril Whelan left the organisation last month after 13 years of service for the board. One week following his departure, non-executive director Bruno Santos-Costa also made the decision to step down from the role.

Cassidy Mason and Vijay Khakhria have recently been appointed as non-executive directors, for a period of three years, while former Chief Minister, Deputy Kristina Moore has also joined the board. Laura Robertson was appointed as interim chair.

Ms Robertson said: “We are looking for a visionary and committed individual who can play a leading role in guiding the strategic direction of the organisation and ensuring the Opera House thrives as a vibrant hub for the arts.”

The ideal candidate would play a role in guiding strategic direction, ensuring financial stability and secure governance, building relationships with the government and sponsors, and acting as an ambassador for the Opera House across the Channel Islands.

“We are looking for a leader who brings gravitas, strategic insight, business acumen and a deep appreciation for the arts,” Ms Robertson added.

“This is a rare opportunity to influence the future of Jersey’s cultural landscape and ensure the Opera House thrives for generations to come.”

Applications will close on Friday 5 September 5th at 5pm. The organisation are welcoming and considering applications from all backgrounds and a broad range of experiences.
