“SPADE in the ground” works are continuing at Overdale in preparation for the new hospital – with a preferred tenderer for the construction of the main acute building “expected to be agreed” before the end of next month.

Health Minister Tom Binet told the JEP that his team remained “hopeful” that the appointment of a main works delivery partner would be possible towards the end of this year.

A planning application for the Island’s new £710 million hospital at Overdale was approved in February.

Site clearance, water and electricity diversions and development works are among the preparatory activities currently taking place at the site, where demolition of the dilapidated, unused and former healthcare buildings was completed towards the end of last year.

Providing an update yesterday, Deputy Binet said: “The procurement process for a main works delivery partner to build the acute hospital continues to progress well, and a preferred tenderer for the construction of the main acute building is expected to be agreed in Q3 2025.

“The process will culminate in the appointment of a main works delivery partner and we remain hopeful that this will be possible towards the end of Q4.”

Deputy Binet continued: “In the meantime, and as previously made clear, ‘spade in the ground’ works have already commenced at Overdale and these will continue in preparation for the arrival of the selected contractor.

“These works include additional site clearance, water and electricity diversions and development works to convert the former Waterworks headquarters into the main site offices.”

Deputy Binet added that a contractor to erect the site hoardings would be appointed “very shortly”, and that a tender would also be issued this quarter for “preparatory earthworks” to commence before the end of this year.

“Under the previous scheme, all of the above would have been carried out by the main contractor at additional cost.

“Under the current team, these essential preparatory works have been contracted with local companies, directly, saving valuable time and money.”
