The RNLI has issued a reminder to dispose of emergency beacons responsibly following a false alert this week that triggered a lifeboat search.

The St Catherine’s inshore lifeboat was launched on Tuesday after an emergency signal was picked up north of La Coupe Point.

It was later confirmed that an EPIRB (an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) had been thrown in a bin in St Helier with its GPS antenna cut off.

“Please dispose of EPIRBs responsibly. Remove the battery before discarding the device,” the RNLI advised.

“If you are unsure, speak to a local marine shop or Jersey Coastguard. It helps prevent unnecessary emergency callouts.”
