A YACHT had to be towed back to St Helier by the RNLI lifeboat on Sunday evening after a “mechanical failure” left it in danger of drifting on to reefs south east of La Rocque.

The RNLI Jersey said while the two people on-board were not in “any immediate danger”, the Coastguard told the crew of the nine-metre sailing vessel – which was around four miles offshore – to anchor while they waited for the St Helier RNLI lifeboat to arrive.

Two RNLI crew hopped aboard when they arrived after the yacht’s crew were unable to raise the anchor.

The vessel was safely towed back to the Harbour.

An RNLI spokesperson said: “Once the yacht was safely along side in La Collette Marina the all-weather lifeboat was refuelled and made ready for her next tasking request.”
