THE ISLAND’s data watchdog has confirmed that it will be bringing legal proceedings against a number of businesses who have not paid their annual fee.
Under the Data Protection Authority (Jersey) Law 2018 and the Data Protection (Registration and Charges) (Jersey) Regulations 2018, all data controllers are legally obliged to register with the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner and pay an annual data protection fee.
The JOIC said that it sent several reminders to a number of sole-traders and local businesses, but that, despite these efforts, some had been “persistently non-compliant and failed to pay the mandatory annual fee”.
The watchdog confirmed that a letter will “shortly be sent to those organisations as a first step in a formal debt recovery process”. Anyone who has previously been contacted about non-registration is urged to contact the JOIC “without delay to prevent further action now being taken”.
