A LOCAL cancer patient is set to make her DJ debut tonight at a charity fundraiser.

Sophie Reid will spin the decks at the “Dance to Defeat” cancer event at the Watersplash on Friday 30 May.

The event will raise funds for two charities: the Brain Tumour Charity Jersey, which was chosen by Sophie, and the Bone Cancer Research Trust in memory of Callum McNulty – a young Islander who died in 2022.

Event organiser Declan Evans was a close friend of Callum, who lost his battle with Ewing sarcoma – a type of bone cancer – when he was just 18 years old.

His mother Joanne McNulty said attending the Dance for Defeat fundraiser tonight would be a “bittersweet”.

“I’m so proud of Declan,” she said. “He always wants to help raise awareness in Callum’s honour and the money raised will go into much needed research.”

Mr Evans – who performs as DJ Hellhound – will headline the event, alongside other local DJs.

Mrs Reid, who has terminal brain cancer, has never mixed music before but is also due to perform at the event.

The 36-year-old said: “When I was asked to be the VIP guest, I thought Declan was just going to get me up there and open the event with a speech.

“Before I knew it, he came around with all of his decks and started teaching me how to DJ.”

Mrs Reid said she has spent the last few weeks practising for the “big event”.

She explained that her husband bought her DJ decks for her birthday after he found out about the benefits of music therapy for brain tumour patients.

The Dance to Defeat event is free to attend, with donation buckets available at the door.

Music starts from 9pm, with the event ending at 2am.
