THE Jersey Fire and Rescue Service is reminding Islanders about the risk of wildfires amid prolonged warm, dry and windy conditions.
Despite yesterday’s rain the ground remains dry and the service is urging the public to take a number of safety precautions, including avoiding using barbecues in grassy or wooded areas.
It has also warned Islanders to never leave a fire unattended, and not to leave bottles or glass in the countryside – as sunlight could start a fire as a result – or discard cigarette ends on the ground or out of car windows.
Station Commander Mark Bailey-Walker from the Fire Safety Department, explained that wildfires “can start and spread rapidly”.
“Even when the likelihood of a major incident is low, the impact on our natural environment, wildlife, and public safety can be significant. Prevention is key — and we’re asking everyone to play their part,” he said.
