A HOSPITAL nurse has been jailed for six months for importing a Class A drug.

Maripem Seguan (56) admitted receiving methamphetamine through the post on three occasions.

Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu said the charge was serious enough that a prison sentence was unavoidable.

Legal adviser Luisa Stuart, prosecuting, said Customs officers intercepted an envelope sent to Seguan on 21 January which was found to contain almost a gram of the substance. And examination of his mobile phone later showed he had received two other deliveries.

Advocate Chris Baglin, defending, said the low quantities of the drug had been for Seguan’s personal use alone and that he had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

“The risk of reoffending is low,” he said. He added that Seguan could lose his accommodation and his right to work as a nurse as a result of the offence.

But Mr Le Cornu said: “One does not expect a nurse to be importing and taking a Class A drug.

“This was not a one-off importation. A non-custodial alternative does not apply.”
