A PRIVATE residence was evacuated earlier this week following a gas leak.

Occupiers of a house on Route des Camps in St Brelade were asked to temporarily vacate their property on Monday evening, after reporting a smell of gas.

The alarm was raised via Island Energy’s emergency helpline and workers were sent to the area, where they took gas readings and requested the residents leave their home, which was not connected to the gas network.

Island Energy confirmed a gas escape had taken place, and said that the issue was “promptly resolved” in just over an hour.

In a statement, the utility company said: “We can confirm we received a report of a smell of gas at a property in Route des Camps.

“Our engineers were quickly deployed, took gas readings and asked the property occupier to vacate the area temporarily as the safety of Islanders is our number one priority. The gas escape was promptly resolved in just over an hour.”

It added: “Thank you to the residents for their co-operation, and for alerting us by using our 24-hour emergency helpline.”

The incident is one of a number attributed to the Island’s ageing gas network. In December, around 50 homes in a St Clement apartment block were evacuated after a pocket of gas was discovered in a service duct.

In another case, 21 Andium Home properties in the Springfield area were vacated last month as a “precautionary measure” after a suspected gas leak, and residents were offered hotel accommodation overnight.

After Monday’s incident, the JEP was informed of similar events at a separate property on the same evening at Regency House in St Helier, where residents also apparently reported a smell of gas.

At the time of going to print, Island Energy had been contacted for confirmation and the cause of any issue.

Firefighters were not called to attend either address, the emergency service also confirmed yesterday.
