A TUMBLE dryer fire in St Mary earlier today has prompted the authorities to issue safety advice.

Jersey Fire and Rescue said two fire engines and four breathing-apparatus wearers were on the scene to control the fire which was believed to have started in a tumble dryer.

Posting on their social media this afternoon, the fire service added that one Islander was checked over by paramedics at the scene but no injuries had been sustained.

The full statement said: “Four breathing apparatus wearers worked swiftly to bring the fire under control and then ventilated the building.

“One occupant was checked over by paramedics at the scene as a precaution, but we’re thankful to report that no injuries were sustained.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but believed to have started in a tumble dryer.”

The service took the opportunity to “remind everyone of some key fire safety tips” for using tumble dryers.

These include:

  • Regular Maintenance: Clean the lint filter after every load. Excess lint can block airflow and increase the risk of fire.

  • Don’t Overload: Overloading your dryer can lead to overheating, which can be hazardous.

  • Proper Ventilation: Ensure the vent hose is clear of obstructions and correctly installed. Proper ventilation prevents overheating.

  • Stay Nearby: Always try to be home when using a dryer and avoid running it overnight.
