THE former chief executive of two of the world’s best known football clubs has been banned from the roads for a month after driving at more than double the speed limit down a “green lane” in his Land Rover.
Businessman Peter Francis Kenyon – who was chief executive at Premier League club Manchester United before moving to top-flight rivals Chelsea – appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with speeding.
Kenyon (71) admitted driving his car at 37mph along Les Ruisseaux in St Brelade on 28 August last year. Les Ruisseaux is a “green lane”, which means that the speed limit is 15mph and priority is given to walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
Relief Magistrate Peter Harris acknowledged that Kenyon had no previous convictions but said that exceeding any speed limit by more than 20mph would inevitably result in a driving ban. He disqualified him from driving for a month and fined him £325.
A high-profile figure in English football, Kenyon (71) joined United in 1997, becoming chief executive three years later, and is remembered for breaking the British transfer record three times in a 13-month period, by signing players Ruud van Nistelrooy, Juan Sebastian Veron and Rio Ferdinand for a total of £77 million. He moved to rivals Chelsea in 2003.
