UNEMPLOYMENT rose slightly in the second quarter of the year.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the total number of people registered as actively seeking work was 30 higher than at the end of the previous quarter and 70 higher compared with the corresponding period last year.

The non-seasonally adjusted figure of 670 was 60 higher than at the end of June 2023 though 30 lower than the first quarter of this year.

Statistics Jersey, who released the figures based on information collected by Customer and Local Services, described the position as “relatively stable” following the spike that took place in the second quarter of 2020 when the impact of the pandemic made itself felt and a subsequent fall in levels over the 18 months that followed.

Figures remain significantly lower than they were before the pandemic when numbers of job seekers were around 200 higher than at present.

Islanders who are unemployed are not required to register as actively seeking work, although it is a requirement for those receiving income support which explains the rise in figures in 2008 when income support was introduced.
