IN the latest twist in the St John’s Road saga, a petition has been lodged calling for the recently introduced one-way system to be scrapped.

The petition asks Infrastructure Minister Andy Jehan to revoke the trial, which started last Tuesday and means the stretch between Parade Road and Cheapside is one-way southbound.

Drivers will not be able to access St John’s Road from the Cheapside end – but the wider section further up St John’s Road is to remain two-way.

The petition also asks Mr Jehan to seek the views of the public following the six-month scheme before “forcing” through any changes to the road.

Jason Acott, who lodged the petition, wrote: “The Infrastructure Minister has stated that if the [one-way] trial scheme is successful, then it will be considered for permanent implementation, therefore forcing through the changes without any proper public consultation.”

The trial scheme was originally meant to be one-way northbound, but was delayed three times following public objections and supply and labour issues.

It was reviewed by Mr Jehan, who recently announced plans to reverse the direction of the one-way system.

Mr Acott’s petition, which has gathered over 250 signatures, will receive a response from ministers if it is backed by 1,000 Islanders.
