JERSEY’S terror-threat level will remain at “moderate”, after UK officials met to discuss a potential review of their security alert in light of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

The UK’s Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, confirmed last week that their level was not being upgraded from “substantial” – meaning “an attack is likely” – to “severe” following an emergency Cobra meeting which was called due to fears that the war in the Middle East could lead to violence on UK soil.

The JEP understands that the Island’s threat level is under constant review – however, it currently remains unchanged and mirrors the situation in the UK when applied to a local context.

The threat to Jersey from terrorism therefore remains at “moderate”, meaning “an attack is possible, but not likely”. This is one threat level below the UK’s current rating.

The national threat level, compiled by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, indicates the likelihood of a terrorist attack occurring against any unspecified target, at any unspecified time and place within the UK. However, JTAC does not assess the local risk.

The States police counter-terrorism unit assesses the threat and risk of terrorism to Jersey to determine a local threat level.

The terror threat level in the UK has stood at “substantial” since it was lowered from “severe” in February last year.
