Two pedestrians dead after being hit by vehicle in Grouville

TWO male pedestrians have died after being hit by a vehicle at night in Grouville, the police have said.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to report a collision – he remains in custody.

The pedestrians were walking along Rue de Fauvic in the direction of St Clement’s Church when they were struck by a vehicle which left the scene without stopping, according to the States police.

The pedestrians were taken to A&E where police said ‘great efforts were made to save them’, but they both died from their injuries late on Saturday night.

All emergency services were called to deal with the ‘major incident’ on Saturday evening, which happened before the junction of Rue au Long and La Route des Cotils.

After an extensive search, police said a white van with ‘substantial’ damage to its front end was found in St Helier, with a 28-year-old man arrested on Sunday morning.

The road was shut for 14 hours following the collision and reopened on Sunday afternoon.
