EXTRA staff are being deployed at the Airport to help Islanders prepare for updated security procedures – while Ports of Jersey works with engineers to address ‘teething problems’ with its new X-ray equipment.

New scanners were introduced at the end of July, enabling liquids in containers of up to two litres to be carried in hand luggage and no longer requiring passengers to remove electronic devices from their bags.

However, the launch of the new security process was immediately followed by technical problems that resulted in disruption and lengthy queues for departing passengers. Some reported waits of up to an hour to get through.

Teething problems with the machines caused queues which stretched back into the departures hall

Providing an update yesterday, a spokesperson for Ports of Jersey said: ‘Both new X-ray machines were operational all weekend.

‘The new system is still bedding in, and we have been working closely with the equipment supplier and their engineers to rectify teething problems.

‘Data generated by the equipment is being analysed to help improve its efficiency.’

The spokesperson continued: ‘In the meantime, passengers are asked to place all small items inside or underneath their hand luggage to minimise the risk of items falling out of the trays, as this could trigger system faults.

‘We are deploying extra staff to advise passengers how to prepare for the new process.’
