AN Islander has called on the government to ban the use of noisy petrol-powered leaf blowers because of their ‘impact on the environment and unnecessary waste of fossil fuels’.

The petition, which had 84 signatures at the time of going to print, explains that many places around the world, including Germany and California, are looking into restricting such tools, and says that Jersey’s government should also set a date after which they can no longer be sold or used.

The petition continues: ‘Petrol-powered leaf blowers are an environmental hazard, a nuisance and an unnecessary waste of fossil fuels.

‘These machines emit harmful pollutants and fine particles which can exacerbate respiratory problems. They damage insect habitats and biodiversity. They’re inefficient, using fossil fuels that contribute to greenhouse-gas emissions and climate change.’

It stated that there were ‘viable alternatives’, such as brooms or electric-powered blowers, which were ‘more environmentally friendly and quieter’.

Islanders have until 4 January 2024 to sign the form.

Petitions must reach 1,000 signatures for a ministerial response and 5,000 to be considered for debate in the States Assembly.
