POLL RESULTS: Should average-speed cameras be introduced in Jersey?

A TOTAL of 64% of respondents to a JEP poll asking whether average-speed cameras should be introduced in Jersey were against the idea.

Calls for the government to ‘get on’ with introducing static speed cameras re-emerged earlier this week, after St Martin Constable Karen Shenton-Stone said approved propositions on the issue and enhancing road safety appeared to have been ‘shelved’.

Her comments came shortly after Vallée des Vaux residents Colin Lever and Tony Allchurch said that average-speed cameras – which capture a driver’s speed between two points and are widely used in the UK – could crack down on speeding in the area while also freeing up police resources.

Following this, the JEP launched the poll. A total of 1,400 votes were cast – with the majority of respondents (64%) against such a move.

Reacting to the results, the head of roads policing, Inspector Callum O’Connor, said: ‘Average speed cameras were designed for motorway usage, and when applied to a local context they are not the answer to enforce the Island’s speed limits.

‘We will continue to work with all partners to look to bring in mobile speed cameras to allow us a strong but flexible approach, with the overarching principle to keep Islanders safe.’
