ASIAN hornets are, it seems, just like any newcomer to Jersey: No sooner have they settled in than they start dreaming of a coastal residence…

This seafront property was spotted below L’Etacquerel Fort on the north coast – and duly removed in a delicate operation involving a RIB, some protective gear and a vacuum.

A pair of hornet hunters were taken to the site from Bouley Bay on a Marine Resources Department RIB before destroying the nest.

Volunteer hunter John de Carteret said: ‘All the flying Asian hornets as well as any that could be encouraged to come out of the nest were vacuumed up using an long extension tube, before the nest structure of chewed wood pulp was scrapped off the rock face into the sea below, where any larvae became fish food.’

It has been a record year for the team of volunteers, who have found and killed well over 150 nests.

One of the more unusual finds of the year was a nest which was recently discovered in the toilets for the former Tamba Park activity centre. CLICK HERE FOR STORY.
