JERSEY Water is urging Islanders to save water wherever they can as temperatures continue to soar and there is still no forecast of rain in the coming week.

Jersey has entered its second ‘absolute drought’ of the summer, following less than a millimetre of rainfall in July.

The desalination plant, which acts as a back-up for water supplied by the reservoirs in Jersey, has already been in operation for a week and the company is now calling on residents to play their part by following some simple, common-sense suggestions on their website.

This advice includes not leaving the tap running when brushing teeth and watering the garden during the early morning or late in the evening when it is cooler.

A spokesperson for the company said: ‘We are monitoring the situation closely and reviewing our operational plans. Owing to the continued hot and dry weather and minimal rainfall, using water carefully has never been so important.

‘We are urging customers to save water where they can, only using what you need when filling the kettle, taking a shower instead of a bath and using a watering can instead of a hosepipe. Visit our website for lots of water-saving tips and to download our free water-saving app – jerseywater.je/save-water.’
