HUNDREDS of Islanders lined Broad Street yesterday as uniformed service personnel, along with cars from the past seven decades, paraded through town to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The pageant featured a formal march from all contingents of uniformed organisations in Jersey and a celebration of vehicles from each decade of Her Majesty’s reign.

With their Union flags, the crowd, many of whom were dressed in jubilee-themed hats and clothing, stretched as far down the street as the eye could see.

Service personnel, who had been practising their march in the Royal Square beforehand, started proceedings and processed down the street to the beat of a marching band.

The pageant finished with the convoy of cars, which were decorated with jubilee bunting and flags – and were met with a continuous round of applause from spectators, delighted to see the classic vehicles.

Members of the audience clapped for their favourites, while the drivers honked their horns in celebration. Around 40 service vehicles were also driven through Broad Street, including old military cars, as well as modern-day police vans and ambulances.

Islander Simon Cook said there had been a ‘beautiful display’ of cars on offer and he praised the organisation of the event.

‘It was a great show and I was a particular fan of the Aston Martins. It was nice to see so many people turn out for the event,’ he said.

Mark Rumbold said that his favourite car was the Jaguar E-Type. He added that he was also impressed with the service vehicles.

‘There was a great atmosphere and crowd and it was nice that they put this event on for everyone. We haven’t been to any of the other celebrations but we’re going to be doing our own family jubilee party tomorrow,’ he said.

Cars featured in the pageant included Austin 7s, Ford Escorts, Rolls-Royces and Mini Coopers, along with modern favourites such as the Aston Martin DB9 and the Audi R8.

A number of the cars had come from the UK and Guernsey.
