‘Campervan site trial has remained in the slow lane’

A MOTORHOME user has accused the government of taking the ‘smallest step possible in the maximum amount of time’ in trialling new campervan sites around the Island.

Paul Hymas, a spokesperson for the campervan community, said it had been almost three years since the States Assembly backed Senator Steve Pallett’s proposition for new overnight stay sites to be looked at – after the popular Le Port area in St Ouen’s Bay was closed down – but meaningful options had not been put forward.

The government is now planning to launch a pilot scheme at Le Port this month, with a booking system to be put in place for a handful of parking bays. But a spokesperson refused to give the JEP any further details of the trial.

Mr Hymas, who represents the Love Le Port group, said he believed the government had deliberately acted slowly and obstructively on the matter.

He said: ‘They’ve taken the smallest step possible in the maximum amount of time that they could.

‘There are only four spaces being marked at Le Port, and that’s three years after the decision was made to explore schemes around the Island.

‘I haven’t been told anything about what’s going on and there has been no consultation with stakeholders about this, as there was meant to be.’

He added that he hoped Deputy Kevin Lewis’ successor as Infrastructure Minister would be more effective in enacting decisions of the States Assembly.

‘He either doesn’t want to do this scheme or is incapable of doing it.

‘We can only hope that the next minister is someone who can and will actually take this forward,’ he said.
