A NEW town primary school could be built on the former Jersey Gas headquarters, after States Members overwhelmingly voted to safeguard the site for education.

In his amendment to the Bridging Island Plan, St Helier Deputy Rob Ward said it would be the ‘perfect location’ for a primary school and should not be used for housing.

Deputy Ward told Members today that there would be ‘sufficient space’ to build a school, provide outdoor play areas and sports facilities, and a further opportunity to extend the adjacent Millennium Town Park.

Andium Homes dropped plans to develop the Jersey Gas site earlier this year, and instead recommended doubling the size of the park. St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft subsequently lodged a proposition in a bid to force the government’s hand on the matter.

However, Members appeared to cancel out that proposition when they voted for Deputy Ward’s amendment by 38 to eight.
