A CYCLE track offering access to St Ouen’s Bay from Les Ormes is under construction and is expected to be built in time for spring.

Mike Graham, general manager of the Bosdet Foundation, a charity which is funded by the Les Ormes operation and which supports other charitable organisations, said that the aim of the project was to improve the visitor experience at the leisure site and encourage Islanders and tourists to ‘enjoy the outdoors’.

The track is a planning requirement of the foundation’s £13-million project to build 60 new self-catering units at Les Ormes. Those plans were approved last year after originally being rejected in November 2019 because of concerns over the scale of the development proposed for the green-zone site.

Mr Graham said: ‘We are always thinking about enhancing the visitor experience and the cycle track will do exactly that. The track will link to the current one that sits alongside Les Quennevais school and will run through our lodge area, along the northern boundary and come out by the green lane, at the bottom of the Airport runway, which goes all the way to L’Etacq.

‘Our holiday resort is used mostly by families and lots of them like the opportunity to hire bikes.

‘The track will promote cycling, which we all know has become increasingly popular throughout the pandemic, and encourage Islanders and tourists to enjoy the outdoors.’

He added: ‘Islanders can now cycle from town to St Aubin, up the railway walk and go through St Brelade and Les Ormes to get down into the bay. It will create easy access and provide a route for those wishing to get back up from the bay too.

‘We have mapped out the route through Les Ormes and have begun laying the tarmac for the start of the track at our entrance. We are hoping to have it finished in time for spring and the upcoming summer season.’
