St Helier covered bike rack plans rejected

The proposal, part of the Sustainable Transport Policy, is to install covered cycle stands across town to encourage cycle use.

An initial pilot scheme, to identify and promote the first tranche of covered stands at a number of sites – including West’s Centre and the Parade Gardens – was proposed by the Infrastructure Department. The ‘pop-up trial’ would be accompanied by a feedback process for users and the community, followed by consultation with the Planning Department.

However, before the vote took place, St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft – who chairs the Roads Committee – indicated that he was strongly against the project, and contended that the Infrastructure Department should first prioritise developing the Island’s cycle network.

‘Why are they wasting time and money on choosing covered cycle racks?’ he said. ‘We don’t like what they are proposing because there’s no cycle route being brought forward.

‘This money should be spent on developing the cycle route rather than on choosing ugly cycle stands which I don’t think will get past the planning process.

‘I cannot imagine the Planning Committee will approve what we saw today.’

The Constable proposed that the Roads Committee say ‘no thank you’ to the scheme and it was rejected unanimously by members.
