The current Covid-19 restrictions meant that the celebrations were somewhat muted at the home in St Mark’s Road, but the care home staff spent many hours in preparation so that everyone could celebrate the day safely.
Isabel Freitas, the care home manager, said that Winnie was overwhelmed at the number of cards and presents she received and the kindness of the Jersey community in going the extra mile to ensure she enjoyed her day.
‘Celebrating your 100th birthday during the current pandemic is clearly an achievement,’ said Mrs Freitas.
‘It was an honour being part of such an achievement and Winnie is an example to all of us of strength and positivity, and she has an amazing sense of humour – things, Winnie said, that were the secret ingredient to getting to 100 years old.’
The children at Springfield School, which is opposite the home, also made birthday cards, which they gave to the staff to pass to her.
Mal Robson, head teacher at Springfield School, whose staff also sent Winnie a card, said: ‘The children and staff of Springfield School wanted to wish Winnie a very happy 100th birthday.
‘The children spotted the balloons in the windows, and being such a local resident near our school, we couldn’t let the day pass by without joining in the celebrations for Winnie.
‘We hope Winnie enjoyed the messages and pictures from the children.’
Mrs Freitas added: ‘Glanville Care Home, Winnie and her family would like to thank particularly the Governor and Lady Dalton for attending and wishing Winnie a happy birthday.
‘Also the schoolchildren for their amazing cards they made and the gifts as well.’
