Chief Minister criticises ‘opportunists’ who tried to remove him from office

Speaking at the Institute of Directors leadership lunch, Senator John Le Fondré expressed his feelings about the recent failed vote of no confidence in his leadership, which was orchestrated by chief Scrutineer Senator Kristina Moore.

And the Island’s political leader said that he felt the issue over outgoing States chief executive Charlie Parker second job had been used by those behind the move as an excuse to ‘bring down’ his government.

‘The vote of no confidence that came through has been, as far as I’m concerned, orchestrated by certain people who don’t like the challenge or the changes that we’ve been putting through,’ he said.

‘It was alluded to by certain Members that it had been in play for quite some time.

‘Essentially, certain people jumped into what they thought was an opportune moment to take advantage of what, in itself, should have been a technical process around an employment issue, to then try and bring down the government in the middle of the pandemic and in the middle of
Brexit.’

He added: ‘I was very pleased with the result, to be honest. It could have been closer. I’m always very cautious on numbers when I’m looking at them.

‘Some of it, interestingly enough, was around people disagreeing with the policies that we have taken, for example, on travel around Covid. They wanted the Island to actually close down a lot more. They made it clear that they didn’t like that policy.

‘I think, at the end of the day, my take on the people who are behind it is they have shown themselves for what they are. And I hope they rue the consequences.’
