Each year Condé Nast Traveler, which has a monthly readership of 5.6 million, asks people to vote for their favourite places around the world – with categories ranging from the best islands, to the world’s best hotels, spas and cities.
The 2020 awards saw 600,000 readers register to vote. Jersey came top of its class, being voted best island in and around the UK and British Isles, while
Guernsey placed ninth in the same category.
Amanda Burns, chief executive of Visit Jersey, said: ‘Peer-to-peer recommendation is one of the most influential reasons for choosing a destination, so being voted as the best island in the UK [and British Isles] by Condé Nast Traveler readers is a powerful accolade for Jersey.
‘This kind of recognition is really important for raising awareness of Jersey as a tourism destination.’
She added that the award was particularly significant this year in light of coronavirus travel restrictions. Ms Burns outlined that while the reopening of Jersey’s borders at the start of July helped many businesses during the summer months, passenger arrivals and hotel occupancy were still significantly lower than last year. She added: ‘Accolades such as the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards keep prospective visitors dreaming about Jersey.
‘We are in touch with the publication to invite them to enjoy a press trip to the Island, when travel restrictions permit, so that the readers of Condé Nast Traveler can find out more about Jersey and have even more reasons to book a trip to our little island with a big spirit.’
