Asbestos warning following vandalism at South Hill site

Regular security patrols are being carried out at the site – the former home of the Environment Department – after a spate of vandalism in recent weeks.

Photos released by the government of the vandalism show holes in walls and smashed doors and windows.

In a statement, the government said work would start next week to secure the building, which has been empty since last year.

‘Work is due to start next week to board up the Government of Jersey’s South Hill building in order to prevent vandalism,’ the statement said. ‘The offices, which were built in the 1960s and are now considered sub-standard construction, were vacated late last year. However, in recent weeks they have been subjected to forced entry and damage.

‘The States of Jersey Police has been alerted and G4S are carrying out regular patrols of the site. There are concerns that vandals could inadvertently disturb asbestos within the premises and so the decision has been taken to board up the offices. Draft planning guidance for the site was issued for consultation before the Covid-19 lockdown and a decision on the future use of the site will be made shortly.’

A new hotel with extensive views over the Harbour and St Aubin’s Bay was previously touted as one of the ideas for the former offices, while Environment Minister John Young suggested the site could be used for affordable housing.

A consultation asking Islanders what should be built on the site closed in February.
