Restaurant group plans return

JP Restaurants, which comprises three Crab Shack outlets, the Oyster Box in St Brelade, Banjo and a trio of cafés in St Helier, expects to open the first of its outlets by early August.

Director Dominic Jones said the group’s three Café Ubé sites, and the Crab Shack in Market Street in St Helier, would be the first to welcome customers back.

‘It will be a gradual process, and we will monitor to make sure our enhanced safety measures are working properly and how trading is going,’ he said. ‘Assuming everything goes to plan, we would then look to reopen the Crab Shack at Gorey, and then in September to continue with Banjo.’

Mr Jones added that the Oyster Box and adjacent Crab Shack in St Brelade’s Bay were potentially the most challenging of the reopenings, as both venues had seasonal peaks in the summer months, with no decisions having yet been made about timings.

‘We need to be sure about consumer confidence, whether restrictions will continue to be lifted and venues being sustainable,’ he said.

Automatic temperature-checking for staff and customers will be one of the measures adopted by the group, as well as the ability to place orders via a mobile phone or sanitised tablet, an online ‘click-and-collect’ option for takeaway orders and revised layouts in both kitchens and dining areas.

JP Restaurants has also agreed to take on the catering outlets at Jersey Airport and the Elizabeth Terminal following the collapse of the UK-based Casual Dining Group, which was formerly responsible for those venues before going into administration at the start of this month.

Mr Jones said he was working with colleagues and Ports of Jersey to finalise details of reopening the Airport and harbour outlets.
