Waxy ball mystery solved

Paul Chambers, marine and coastal manager, said that after carrying out investigations, the industrial substance had now been properly disposed of.

The ball was originally found by 50-year-old Gillian Devon, who was walking her labrador Coco when she came across it.

Mr Chambers said: ‘We have taken a look at it and it looks as if it is grease – the sort of thing that you would use industrially, in an engine room.

‘I think it was probably in a barrel on a ship and got lost overboard.

‘It is very soft and that is why it has picked up a lot of nonsense on the outside but when we cut it open it is very clean, which is partly what makes us think it is grease.’

He added: ‘It is certainly odd. I do not recall seeing anything like that washed up on the beach before.’

Mr Chambers added that the recent severe weather and exceptionally high tides had led to other debris, including a large number of lobster pots, washing up on the Island’s shores.

‘In the last week, I would say we have probably picked up between 15 to 20 lobster pots, most of them beyond hope. We certainly had enough to be able to fill one of our trucks up,’ he said.
