Six more town spaces for electric car-rental initiative

EVie, which launched in January, recently bought more of the vehicles and now has permission to position them in three further central town areas, including the Waterfront.

The company already has vehicles in place at the southern end of the the Parade, at the eastern end of Tunnell Street and on Halkett Street – near Bean Around the World.

‘We have now got eight cars on the Island and four are sitting in spaces granted to them by St Helier,’ Gavin Breeze, director of EVie, said.

‘Now, we are being given six new parking spaces granted by the Growth, Housing and Environment Department and the Jersey Development Company and cars will be going in opposite the Liberation Station, at the Esplanade – opposite Carey Olsen – and at the Waterfront underground car park.

He added: ‘Our utilisation has been good and better than we expected. The cars were out for a combined total of 18 hours last Saturday but we do need to build up more utilisation during the week.’

Mr Breeze also said that the company had begun to generate a loyal following.

‘We have made a very good start but there is still lots to do. What we are beginning to see is that we are having a lot of repeat customers when, for example, a parent is taking their child to a karate class at a certain time in the evening or someone taking their grandparent for lunch,’ he said.

‘The vans have also been very popular and we are now planning to bring more of those into the fleet. They seem to have been well used, with people going to the recycling centre at La Collette or with people doing flat moves. They are actually quite an important part of the fleet.’

Anyone wishing to rent one of the vehicles should download the EVie app on their smartphone and set up an account.
