Creating a town council would remove ‘bonkers’ rules

Simon Crowcroft is part of a working group in St Helier that is looking at the positives and negatives of turning the parish into a town council.

By doing this they could have powers devolved from the States, and issues could be dealt with at a local level.

Work is in the early stages and Mr Crowcroft said: ‘By becoming more of a town council we could take on more services, things like licensing could be done by the parish.

‘At the moment it goes before us and then it has to go to the Treasury then to the Bailiff, but it could be much simpler.

‘As could planning, the matters in this area could come before the parish.

‘It is bonkers also that to put a pedestrian crossing in the middle of St Helier we have to go to the States.

‘It would be better if we controlled the roads inside the ring road, because it is not likely the government would give us control of the ring road.’ Currently St Helier deals with its own street cleaning, but many other issues are done by the States.

Mr Crowcroft said by devolving more powers he could deal with complaints when people came to him, rather than saying they have to go through official government channels.
