Ballots are revised on latest States pay offer

Ballots are revised on latest States pay offer

The move comes after a three-week ballot on the same matter was voided after teaching assistants, who are classified as civil servants, were offered a separate pay package.

Last month a revised offer was made to civil servants of a 1% pay rise for 2018 and 2019, 2.1% in one-off cash payments over the two years and a 1.3% above-inflation pay award for 2020.

Terry Renouf, the Jersey president of JCSA Prospect, said that a new poll had now been arranged by his union and Unite, both of which represent civil servants.

‘We are organising a ballot on Monday, which will run for a week. We have had to exclude the teaching assistants because the employer is treating them differently and we don’t have details of that,’ he said

‘Our work-to-rule industrial action will be suspended in the meantime until the ballot closes on 1 July.

‘It is up to members to decide what they want to do after that.’

Mr Renouf added that the union had not been consulted on proposals suggested this week in the States by Chief Minister John Le Fondré to introduce the role in Jersey of senior teaching assistant, which would be able to take classes and take pressure off supply staff.

‘The Chief Minister said that the unions had been consulted on this matter but we are the only unions who represent teaching assistants and we have not been spoken to,’ he said.

‘They have to realise that we are the bargaining entity in this matter.’

The poll results are due to be announced shortly after the ballot closes.
