Working group formed to plan ‘Liberation 75’ events

Liberation Day 2020 will be the 75th anniversary of the end of the Occupation and the Bailiff’s Consultative Panel has formed a working group to lead and manage a series of events and projects for the entire year.

The Bailiff, Sir William Bailhache, said: ‘The formation of this working group is an excellent opportunity to ensure that during this significant anniversary year we make sure that the Island celebrates it in the best possible way. I believe that this working group will be inclusive of all Islanders and that they will present a comprehensive series of events for 2020.’

Deputy Kevin Pamplin has been appointed as the group chairman to work alongside Senators Sarah Ferguson and Steve Pallett, St Lawrence Constable Deidre Mezbourian as well as Deputies Montfort Tadier and Jeremy Maçon.

Deputy Pamplin said: ‘It is a privilege for me to be put forward as the chairman of this working group. The group and members of the public have a fantastic opportunity to come up with some innovative and exciting ideas for the celebrations of the Island’s freedom.

‘The 75th anniversary is also pivotal, similar to the recent Great War events, where we can educate our younger generations about our national day and encourage our senior citizens who have first-hand experience to share their personal accounts with the youngest Islanders.’

Islanders are invited to a consultation workshop on Saturday 26 January to help the group to identify key themes for the celebrations.

The morning event will involve a number of round table discussions and it is hoped that these discussions will support the working group in presenting its programme for what is being called ‘Liberation 75’.

As the workshop capacity is limited, anyone wishing to attend should apply to the Bailiff’s Chambers or they can submit ideas in writing.

Expressions of interest should be addressed to Steven Cartwright, Chief Officer, Bailiff’’s Chambers, Royal Court Building, Royal Square, Jersey JE1 1BA or emailed to bailiffschambers@gov.je and tagged Liberation 2020.
