Islanders asked to keep an eye out for seal pup

The seal was struggling in the water and showing signs of dehydration but was unable to make it to shore.

Donna de Gruchy, Jersey co-ordinator for British Divers Marine Life Rescue, said that she was tracking the seal on Wednesday afternoon but lost sight of the pup when it became too dark.

And she is now asking Islanders walking along the coast to be on the look-out and to contact the BDMLR or the JSPCA if they see the young seal.

She said yesterday: ‘We were called out yesterday and we monitored it from the breakwater. We lost it when it got dark and we haven’t seen it again since.

‘We need it to come in so we can get the vet to have a look at it. It is showing signs of dehydration and it definitely needs help – we need to locate him again before it is too late.’

She advised Islanders who see a seal pup not to chase it back into the water, to keep dogs on a lead and to call the BDMLR.

‘Unfortunately, he could be anywhere now,’ she said. ‘If you do spot him let us know.’

Islanders can contact the JSPCA on 724331 or send a message to the BDMLR Facebook page.
