Fireworks sparked furze fire

Firefighters were called to the large furze fire at around 9.30 pm, shortly after the firework display from the Moulin de Lecq bonfire night event.

The blaze was said to be rapidly growing and spreading towards houses.

Two fire engines and a water carrier attended from town together with an engine from the Western retained station.

In total 15 firefighters attended the incident.

At the same time a fourth fire engine was called to a minor incident in St Helier which left the Island without cover as all resources were allocated.

Resources then had to be released from Grève de Lecq to deal with a hedgerow alight near to St John’s Recreation Centre. The cause of that incident is currently being investigated.

In a statement, the Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Jersey Fire and Rescue would like to remind the public to use fireworks responsibly and to check weather conditions before using fireworks or lighting bonfires.’
