Jersey composer’s symphony celebrates Armistice centenary

Jersey’s Great War Symphony, Two Brothers, was composed by Charles Mauleverer and tells the story of Charles and Arthur Mallet, who volunteered to fight in 1915. Charles was killed in May 1916. Arthur survived the war and returned home.

English conductor Stephen Bell will lead the augmented Jersey Chamber Orchestra as they perform Two Brothers and other musical works associated with the First World War at the Celebration of Armistice concert, which is being held at Fort Regent at 7 pm on Saturday 10 November.

It comes at the end of a two-week programme of events to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War at 11 am on 11 November 1918.

Other performers at the concert include English soprano Kate Royal and the Jersey Chamber Orchestra, the Band of the Island of Jersey, Jersey’s cadet organisations, Jersey Sings Choir, Jersey Armistice Choir and the Jersey Arts Centre youtheatre.

Mr Mauleverer has previously been commissioned to compose a number of works, and has released an album, Far Above A Midnight Sky. He has also worked on pop songs, adverts, documentaries and numerous short films, and is one of a handful of Islanders to have won music and choral scholarships to study in the UK.

He was educated at Winchester College and studied music at Oxford University. He later gained a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London to study for a masters in composition, pop song writing and composition for
film.

He has also worked on choral pieces, a set of preludes for piano, a ‘tone poem’ for orchestra, song for baritone and piano, an electronic piece and more.
