Man requests prison, as it is ‘best detox’

And as a result, Andrew Johnstone (39), of no fixed address, was sent to La Moye for six weeks.

Opening the case in the Magistrate’s Court, Centenier David Webber said that the Shelter Trust contacted the police at about 12.25 am on 5 September to say that three men were blocking the Lewis Street entrance to the property.

The trio had been told they were not being allowed entry, and when officers arrived, two of the men went away but Johnstone refused to leave.

The court heard that he was swearing loudly at one of the police officers and was clearly aggressive and drunk. As he was being told that he was not welcome that night, he shouted ‘shut the f**k up’ to the officer. The defendant also got a mobile phone out of his pocket and ‘threatened to bury the telephone in the officer’s head’.

The officer had to grab hold of the defendant’s arm to restrain him as he lunged toward him.

Advocate Heidi Heath, defending, said that Johnstone had ‘blacked out’ and could not remember anything from the evening before. She said that he acknowledged that he had an alcohol problem and wanted to go to custody so he could get the detox he most desperately needs.

‘As he says in his own words: “Prison is the best detox going”,’ said the lawyer.

In delivering the court’s sentence, Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu said: ‘I am going to sentence you to six weeks in prison, which should be long enough to get you some help.’
