Revised hospital plan cuts three storeys off building

The future hospital team is seeking outline planning permission for the new facility after the Environment Minister refused an initial application to build on the current site extending into Kensington Place due to concerns about the proposals’ scale and height.

Key features of the revised scheme, which are based on recommendations made by an independent UK planning inspector following a public planning inquiry, propose a lower, wider six-storey building rather than the nine-storey building initially proposed and adding another half deck onto Patriotic Street car park.

The new plans also include an application to demolish Westaway Court, a building previously used for staff accommodation on the opposite side of Parade Gardens from the Hospital, and to build a new block to house outpatient facilities including cardiac, respiratory and clinical investigations.

Within the application the future hospital team have included illustrations to ‘aid interpretation’ of the outline planning proposals but stress they are not the final design for the scheme.

The application states: ‘These depict for indicative purposes, one way in which the parameter plans and design principles may be built on whilst reserving flexibility for the design to vary within the parameters and principles stated.’

The team say that the project remains within the £466 million agreed budget and the proposed timetable for completion of clinical services in 2024.

A project team spokesman added: ‘We’re pleased to have reached another important landmark in the project by submitting this application. We hope many Islanders will take the opportunity to have a look at the plans online, and we will also be holding further engagement events during the coming months where members of the team will be available to answer queries.’

Environment Minister Steve Luce has previously said another public planning inquiry will be held into the revised plans.
