Reform Jersey chairman to seek Senatorial seat

The 27-year-old chairman of Reform Jersey – the Island’s only political party – will be leaving his seat in St Helier’s No 2 district to seek one of the eight Senatorial spots in May.

Deputy Mézec, who is the youngest sitting politician, came second in the Senatorial by-election in 2016, losing out to Senator Sarah Ferguson by 131 votes.

He said that an Islandwide mandate would mean he would be ‘better placed’ to improve the way the States worked and that all Reform Jersey candidates would be ‘pursuing policies which will raise the standard of living for all Islanders’.

‘Over the last ten years the States has lost sight of what should be its number one aim – improving life for ordinary Islanders,’ he said.

‘I believe we must spend the next few years deliberately reversing the trends which have seen a drastic increase in poverty and a frozen standard of living. This will be the main focus of my campaign.

‘I am determined that the next government must be more politically inclusive and improve the way it deals with the issues facing Jersey.

‘During the last term, I believe I have provided a strong opposition voice and have robustly held the government to account over its mistakes. But in this next term, I want to be at the forefront of delivering positive change.’

Deputy Mézec is also currently chairman of the Care of Children in Jersey Review Panel and a member of the Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel.
