Islander in court on historical child abuse charges

Ian David Priestly (65), of Rouge Bouillon, is alleged to have committed two indecent assaults on a girl during the 1990s.

He is also alleged to have procured the commissioning of five acts of gross indecency by a different female under the age of 16.

Advocate Ian Jones, defending, said that no objection would be raised if the Attorney General was to directly indict the case to the Royal Court.

The defendant was given consent to travel to Alicante in Spain for the Christmas and New Year holidays but will have to provide a bail surety of £5,000.

Should the usual committal procedure be followed, a formal committal hearing will take place in the Magistrate’s Court on 18 January. In the meantime the case was adjourned until 4 January. Mr Priestly will not have to appear on that date.

As part of his bail conditions, Mr Priestly was ordered not to contact named individuals and he was also banned from being in the company of anyone under 16. He was further ordered to surrender his passport and driving licence but was told he could have his passport returned for the trip to Spain prior to his departure when the surety is paid.
