Tributes to ‘wonderful husband and father’ who died after explosion

Michal Juzef Kmuk suffered ‘severe burns’ after the early morning gas explosion at staff accommodation on Rue des Nouettes on Saturday.

He was airlifted to the Chelsea and Westminster Burns Unit for specialist treatment but died at 4.40 am on Monday.

The 40-year-old Polish national was an employee at the Jersey Royal Company. He leaves his wife, Joanna, and a daughter.

An investigation into the incident is being carried out by the States police and Jersey Fire and Rescue Service. The explosion is not being treated as suspicious.

On Monday night a memorial service for family and friends of Mr Kmuk was due to be held at the Catholic Church of St Mary & St Peter on Wellington Road.

And tributes started to appear online for Mr Kmuk. One friend simply posted a picture of a candle with a black background along with ‘Michal Kmuk [*]’. The [*] is a symbol commonly used by the Polish community and is described as the equivalent to the English RIP.

William Church, sales and marketing manager for the Jersey Royal Company, said Mr Kmuk had worked for the firm for several years.

In a short statement, he added: ‘It is with great sadness that The Jersey Royal Company reports that following an accident in rented accommodation on Friday evening that Michal Kmuk, a longer standing employee of the company, died earlier today of the injuries that he had sustained.

‘Michal (40) is survived by his wife Joanna and daughter and our thoughts are with them and his wider friends and family. A full investigation as to the cause of the accident is continuing.’

Mr Kmuk’s co-worker Łukasz Łuczak said he was a ‘very good colleague’. He added: ‘A wonderful husband and father. We will miss him.’

Another person was treated in the Hospital’s accident and emergency department following the blast. They were not admitted to hospital.
