States Members were this morning due to begin debating proposals for funding the new £466 million hospital.

However, Treasury Minister Alan Maclean withdrew the plans at the last minute.

In a statement in the Chamber this morning, Senator Maclean said: ‘The Council of Ministers remains fully committed to the delivery of a new hospital.

‘However, we have to get the timing and the level of borrowing right for this important project.’

The proposals lodged by the minister suggested borrowing up to £275 million with the rest being covered from the Island’s strategic reserve.

The minister added that waiting until the autumn would allow the Council of Ministers to present the funding proposals alongside a full business plan.

He added that withdrawing the debate would bring greater certainty.

Senator Maclean emailed Members on Monday evening announcing his intention to withdraw the debate.

He said this came following concerns raised by members of both the Council of Ministers and the Assembly about the funding proposals.
