Last year, the States agreed to cut the salaries of newly qualified teachers by up to £8,000 under the Medium Term Financial Plan Addition.

Education Minister Rod Bryans said that the move would bring the Island’s entry-level salaries more closely in line with those in the UK, while still providing enough of a financial incentive to those opting to work in Jersey.

Deputy Geoff Southern, who lodged the vote of censure, argues that Deputy Bryans wrongly said during the MTFP Addition debate that newly qualified teachers in Jersey earn £16,000, or 70 per cent, more than their UK counterparts.

According to Deputy Southern, the minister was not making a like-for-like comparison – instead skewing the figures to give the largest possible gap between salaries in Jersey and the UK.
