Lee Allen, who has been fishing the waters around Jersey for more than 25 years, says the measures introduced last week by Environment Minister Steve Luce will hurt those who rely on fishing to make a living.

Under the new rules only commercial fishermen who have a record of catching more than 250 kg of bass a year between 2014 and 2016 will be given a permit to land the species. They will be restricted to catching a maximum of 100 kg a month and will only be able to fish using rod and line.

There will also be a three per cent allowance for vessels deploying fixed gill nets – a ‘wall’ of netting set in a straight line, with weights at the bottom and floats at the top, which catches marine life indiscriminately.
