Islander presented with Légion d’Honneur

Major Alan Barnes was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur medal by Jersey’s French Consul, David Myatt, on behalf of the French ambassador, during a short ceremony in the Royal Court building, surrounded by friends and family.

The Légion d’Honneur is awarded to those who have demonstrated outstanding service in a military or civilian capacity.

The 97-year-old, who has two children, Juliet Waymouth and Ian Barnes, and who is married to Betty (91), joined the Army in 1939 at the age of 20.

He served for six years in a tank recovery unit and became a Second Lieutenant after just three months.
