The 53-year-old, who was convicted in Madeira in 1993 for aggravated homicide after he shot and killed his wife with a rifle in front of their five-year-old son during a confrontation about a suspected affair, was jailed for 12 months and one week for grave and criminal assault and a separate incident of being drunk and disorderly.

Opening the case for the prosecution, Solicitor General Mark Temple said that at about 4 pm on Sunday 3 July, De Sousa approached a 35-year-old parish traffic warden who was in the process of issuing a ticket.
