Lee Bennett (43) said that at about 3.15 pm on Tuesday, while he was stopped in traffic near the new States police headquarters, a car crashed into the back of his green Volkswagen Transporter and the motorist drove away without giving his name or insurance details.

Mr Bennett, whose 67-year-old mother as well as his two children were passengers in the car, said: ‘I was driving down the hill going east and there was a lot of traffic. Then there was a big smash into the back of the van, so I got out and spoke to the driver, who was a young man.

‘He was really apologetic and said that his foot had slipped off the brake, but I could see the traffic building up so I told him to follow me around the corner and he agreed. But when I stopped, I saw him just drive straight on.’
